Canada's governor general has gutted a seal slaughtered for her during an official Arctic trip.

She then cut out its heart and ate it to show solidarity with embattled Inuit seal hunters.

Hundreds of Inuit gathered for a community feast in Rankin Inlet in Nunavut, the first stop on Governor General Michaelle Jean's trip to nine remote northern communities this week as Canada's head of state and representative of Queen Elizabeth II.

Jean reportedly knelt over the carcass of a freshly slaughtered seal and used a traditional ulu blade to slice meat off the skin.

She then asked one of her hosts: "Could I try the heart?"

According to broadcaster CTV, Jean said it was "absolutely delicious" and tasted "like sushi".

As she wiped her blood-soaked fingers with a tissue, Jean explained her support for Canada's traditional Inuit seal hunt and trade, which some fear will be devastated by a European ban on seal products.

The European Parliament recently voted to endorse an EU ban on seal products in protest against commercial hunting methods.

Northern aboriginals are exempt from the ban, but they worry it will inevitably affect their livelihoods too when it takes effect in 2010.

"Once you destroy a market for one group, it is destroyed for all," explained Inuit leader Mary Simon. In a statement, she applauded Jean for her support of the hunt.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay, who hails from Atlantic Canada, said ahead of a trip to monitor annual Arctic military exercises that he looked forward to some "delicious seal".

"I would encourage all Canadians to try some," he said.

Animal rights groups, however, were critical of Jean for appearing to also support Canada's commercial hunt.

The Canadian government maintains that the 350-year-old commercial hunt is crucial for some 6,000 North Atlantic fishermen who rely on it for up to 35 per cent of their total annual income.

Animal rights groups, however, say it is barbaric and have waged an aggressive campaign in recent years to stop the annual hunt.

"I was deeply disappointed," said Rebecca Aldworth of the Humane Society.

"I felt that (Jean's) actions were inappropriate given the controversy over commercial seal hunting.

"It's my hope that the governor general will clarify her actions and tell Canadians that her intent truly was to show solidarity with Inuit seal hunters and not with the commercial side of the industry.

"Nobody opposes subsistence hunting by Inuit people. We're opposed to the industrial-scale slaughter of seals," said Aldworth, echoed by Sheryl Fink, spokeswoman for the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

Ottawa authorised the kill of 338,000 seals this year, insisting the hunt does not threaten the species.

But a slump in pelt prices has meant fewer hunters on ice floes off Canada's Atlantic coast.

Fewer than 65,000 seals were expected to be killed, generating a mere $C7.5 million ($A8.14 million) for sealers, a fisheries spokesman told AFP.

RICHMOND, Va. The Michael Vick dogfighting case made its way to the floor of the U.S. Senate Thursday when its most senior member publicly declared his outrage, saying he's witnessed one execution but wouldn't mind seeing another "if it involves this cruel, sadistic, cannibalistic business of training innocent, vulnerable creatures to kill."

The strong words from Sen. Robert Byrd, D-WV, widely known for his devotion to animals, come as dogfighting controversy swirls around the Atlanta Falcons star quarterback. Vick and three others were indicted earlier this week on felony charges of competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting, and conducting the enterprise across state lines.

The dogs were housed, trained and fought at a property owned by Vick in Surry County, Va., under an outfit named "Bad Newz Kennels," the indictment says.

Among the grisly findings: Losing dogs either died in the pit or were electrocuted, drowned, hanged or shot. The indictment said purses climbed as high as $20,000 for fights.

Vick's legal troubles prompted Nike to suspend the release of its latest product line named after him.

Nike told retailers it will not release a fifth signature shoe, the Air Zoom Vick V, this summer. Nike spokesman Dean Stoyer said the four shoe products and three shirts that currently bear Vick's name will remain in stores.

That news comes on the heels of a statement from the Humane Society of the United States calling upon Nike to pull its Vick clothing and shoes from retailers and from its Web site. It also called upon NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend Vick.

The Falcons signed Vick to a 10-year, $130 million contract in December 2004. He has been paid about $44 million, including $37 million in guaranteed bonuses.

  • Just few blocks away

In tonight's local news, two teenage boys 16 and 17 were arrested from mugging an elderly woman in her 70's last night at around 10PM, near a bustop. They stole a very little amount of
cash from the lady's purse. Observers called the Ambulance when they saw the lady lying in the pavement in a pool of blood, the lady was proclaimed dead tonight.
The prosecutors are demanding the suspects be tried as adults calling for a maximum of life sentence instead of trying them in juvenile court which will carry a maximum prison term of 3 years in a juvenile
    jail.

What a fuck up world we live in!

Credit crunch? Home Foreclosures? Job security? Mortgage Payment Defaults? Don't worry, be happy - if you are an MP, a brit MP, that is! ;)

    Here are other deductible goodies:
Oliver Letwin, the head of policy for the Conservative Party, $3,000 to repair a leaky pipe under his tennis court in Somerset.
Barbara Follett, a Labor member of Parliament, $38,000 for house security guards.
David Willetts, a Conservative education spokesman, charged $120 to have an electrician to change his light bulbs.

Other expenses charged included gardening, maintenance, home renovations, chauffeurs, home furnishing, dog food, dolby stereo soundsys, High Definition Plasma Giant Screen TV.S, custom black chromed toilet seats including pornography and horse manure.

The worst public outrage came from the disclosure of some members of parliament deducting their renovation expenses at taxpayers’ expense on more than one property then sold them for ptofit. While the rest of the country is struggling from still rising foreclosures and struggling to meet their mortgages, MPs claimed reimbursements for mortgage payments on houses that they rent out and second homes within 10 miles of their first homes.

The public fury in these tough times had suggested that Parliament be dissolved, as it was in 1653, when Oliver Cromwell is said to have shouted,

“Depart, I say; and let us have done with you! In the name of God, go!” everyone home.
